When this tool is useful

Practical preliminary checks

  • Estimating paint for walls and ceilings
  • Comparing product coverage rates
  • Planning material quantities for renovation work
  • Checking whether a proposed paint quantity is broadly consistent with the measured area

How it works

The calculator multiplies the paintable area by the number of coats, divides by the entered coverage rate in square metres per litre, then adds the selected allowance.

Important estimating note

Coverage varies with substrate, preparation, colour change, application method and the paint manufacturer. Primers, sealers and specialty coatings should be calculated separately where required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate litres of paint?

Multiply the paintable area by the number of coats and divide by the product coverage rate. Add an allowance if appropriate for the project.

What paint coverage rate should I use?

Use the coverage rate stated by the paint manufacturer for the selected product and substrate rather than relying on a generic rate.

Should primer be included in the same quantity?

Primer, sealer and finish coats may have different coverage rates, so calculate them separately when the painting system requires them.
