Excavation & Spoil Volume
Estimate in-situ excavation and a loose-spoil allowance.
- In-situ volume
- 25.00 m³
- Loose spoil allowance
- 31.25 m³
FREE EXCAVATION VOLUME CALCULATOR
Estimate excavation volume from length, width and depth, then apply a bulking allowance to approximate loose spoil volume. The tool can also provide a simple truck-load estimate.

How it works
The in-ground volume is length × width × depth. A bulking factor is then applied because excavated material usually occupies more volume once disturbed. Truck loads are estimated by dividing loose spoil volume by the nominated truck capacity.
Important estimating note
Real excavation quantities can vary substantially with irregular profiles, rock, trenching, footing excavations, stockpiling, moisture, material type and truck loading limits. Use surveyed levels and project-specific earthworks information for final quantities.
For a simple rectangular excavation, multiply length by width by average depth to get cubic metres.
Soil expands when excavated because the compacted material is disturbed. The amount of expansion depends on the material, which is why a bulking allowance is used for preliminary estimates.
It provides a broad estimate only. Truck payload, body volume, material density, access and loading conditions can all change the actual number of loads.
