When this tool is useful

Practical preliminary checks

  • Early brick or block quantity checks
  • Comparing wall areas during design changes
  • Preparing preliminary supplier enquiries
  • Allowing for a percentage of cutting, breakage and waste

How it works

The calculator uses the selected unit face dimensions plus the entered mortar-joint thickness to calculate approximate units per square metre. It multiplies that rate by net wall area, then adds the nominated wastage allowance.

Important estimating note

Brick dimensions and recommended joint details vary by product and manufacturer. Actual quantities also depend on openings, piers, corners, bond pattern, cuts and supplier packaging. Confirm the final take-off against the selected product data and project drawings.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks do I need per square metre?

The number depends on the brick dimensions and mortar joints. Use the selected product dimensions or supplier coverage information for the most accurate result.

Should I add wastage to brick quantities?

A wastage allowance is commonly considered for cutting and breakage, but the appropriate percentage depends on the product, bond, wall layout and site handling.

Does the calculator subtract doors and windows?

Use the net wall area after deducting openings if you want the estimate to exclude those areas.
